-Saturday, July 27th – Joint Garden Tour with the Maine Hosta Society
We will arrive at Donna Primozich’s garden in Norway, ME at 10:00 a.m. where we will see an outstanding collection of hostas and a host of many plants of several species. If you have visited Donna’s garden, you know that there is something new to see each year. The landscaping and plant material are second to none! Be sure to bring along your camera. We will be traveling by private vehicles. We plan to depart from Donna’s garden at 11:00 a.m. Donna’s home and garden are located at 361 Norway Center Road, Norway, ME. A GPS in your vehicle should use this address as your destination.

The garden tour continues with a visit to the grand gardens at Josh and Sue Labonville’s in Shelburne, NH.  In just a few short years, the Labonvilles have established an outstanding hosta collection and a large number of complementary companion plants. Their daylilies should be in bloom at the time of our visit. It is a spacious garden that is a “must see” garden for everyone. Last season the large swimming pool was removed to make room for a large perennial garden. If you take photos, bring your camera. There will be many subjects for you to capture. Remember, you may be entering some of your best photos in our annual photo contest at our annual meeting.
While at Josh and Sue’s garden, we will plan to eat our lunches and hold our annual Hosta Swap. Lunch comes first and shortly after our arrival. So, please remember to bring a brown bag / boxed lunch and a folding chair.
Hosta Swap: Everyone is encouraged to participate in this fun activity. We ask each member to bring a potted hosta that is correctly named and marked by variety. What to choose? Ask yourself this question: Would I be pleased to receive this plant? We will be drawing names of all contributors at random. It’s fun to go home with a hosta that is new to you! So, please plan to participate.
Directions to the Labonville’s Garden: If you have a GPS, plug in their address: 10 Mount Moriah Drive, Shelburne, NH. No GPS? Just go online to Google Maps & Directions. Enter your address as the starting point and the Labonville’s address as your destination. Print out your personalized set of directions and you are good to go.

Holiday Party Rescheduled

With the weather coming tomorrow featuring snow, ice and rain, we will be postponing our holiday party until next Sunday, December 9.  While the storm will bring rain to everyone eventually, there will still be snow and ice to contend with in the western part of the state.  Why take chances. Hopefully mother nature will bless us with better weather next week.

Annual Holiday Party, December 2, Noon – 3 PM

Hi Everyone.  Our final meeting of the year, our annual holiday party, is scheduled for Sunday, December 2 from noon – 3 PM.  This will be a pot luck dinner, so please bring a festive holiday dish to share.

We will be exchanging gifts in our Yankee Swap, though this year we may have an interesting twist if folks are interested.  Everyone starts off with their own wrapped gift and sits in one big circle. There are 3 rounds rolling a die and doing what is shown in the photo. At the end of the game whatever gift you end up with you keep! We will discuss it at the meeting and choose the game or the traditional Yankee swap. Please keep gifts to under $15 in value.

We will play our holiday bingo for the following prizes:

  • Bartzella Peony
  • $100 Gift Card for Gardener’s Supply
  • $100 Gift Card for O’Donal’s Nursery
  • $50 Gift Certificate for Broadway Gardens

And last but not least we will have the following door prizes:

  • Daylily BIG HONKING BAHAMA RICHIE (2018 HM Winner)
  • Daylily END OF THE TUNNEL (2018 HM Winner)
  • Daylily ENTWINED IN THE VINE (2018 Stout Silver Medal Winner)
  • Book: Open Form Daylilies
  • 25 Kinkaid Markers

Please let Paul know if you will be attending by responding to paul.bourret@gmail.com.  Please don’t “reply to all”.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and we look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

September / October Meeting Schedule

Because of business travel, Paul will be unable to give his presentation in September.  So, we are cancelling our September meeting.

Our October meeting will take place on Sunday, October 7 from noon-3.  THis will be our annual business meeting where we will elect officers for the next 2 years and set our schedule for next year.

We will also have our fall Soup Social pot-luck.  Bring some food to share.

Rex Beisel will also give a presentation on hybridizing, seed planting etc.

Please join us at the SMCC Horticulture building on Slocum Drive.

2018 Lobstah Classic

This year we had around 105 items to browse through.

Our first speaker was Chuck Doughty from Cochato Nursery in Holbrook Massachusetts.

Chuck brought his lovely wife Sue assist

him…sort of.

After lunch, Mike Georges from Ontario described his breeding program which focuses on toothy cultivars

Following our speakers, we held a live auction of club-purchased and donated daylilies and hostas.  As is tradition, we finished the day with a Maine “lobstah” dinner overlooking Casco Bay.  Thank you to everyone who came, donated, spoke, and assisted the days events.  We also would like to thank SMCC, Sodexo, and Dock’s Restaurant.  See you again in 2019!
